Which Headset Works Best For Skype On A Mac?

I'm currently looking for a headset so that I can Skype on my Mac.

Funnily enough I already have "a" headset, but the connectors are the wrong size, thus rendering it unusable. For sanity's sake a USB connection might work better, though I could be completely wrong about that.

I want something that is compact enough to fit in my laptop bag and offers good audio quality (VOIP can be taxing enough without using shoddy equipment!)

I'm not overly concerned about the price, as I'd prefer to have a good quality product that lasts, rather than something that breaks after a couple of months.

Any and all recommendations open!

New Apple Products or Technical Glitch?

When the Apple store "goes dark" it's usually because they're adding new products.

However it's gone dark this morning and as far as I know no new products were announced... or maybe I missed it..

Or, it could simply be that they've run into some technical issue that is affecting their site

Update: It seems it was a technical glitch or maintenance

MSN Messenger Broken on Adium and Pidgin

If, like me, you don't use Windows, then you probably rely on Adium or Pidgin for instant messaging.

As of this morning neither Adium or Pidgin has not been able to connect to the MSN messenger servers for instant messaging.

If you're on a Mac you can install the Microsoft Messenger for Mac software or you can downgrade Adium to an older version.

The Pidgin developers are aware of the issue and are promising to release a fix, though when remains to be seen

For more in depth technical details check out the post on the Adium blog

BBC iPlayer Now Available For Mac (and Linux!)

BBC's iPlayer labs have recently released a new version of their software that will work on both Mac and Linux.

Pity that other media companies, such as Sky, haven't followed suit yet.

Not everyone uses PCs Microsoft Windows!!

UPDATE: Since everyone has rightly pointed out, the usage of the word PCs in my original post was inaccurate. It has, instead, been replaced with the word "Windows"

Cross Browser Testing Makes Sense

Trying to get sites to display identically across multiple browsers and multiple operating systems is awkward. This site probably doesn't display particularly well on all browsers, but I'm not a professional web designer / developer, so you'll have to excuse me. It's also not a corporate / business website trying to sell products or services to the public.

Screenclick, however, is a business website.

Earlier this evening I decided to visit it on my Mac using Firefox. Apart from the really annoying splash page, which doesn't do anything useful, the main page does not load correctly in Firefox 3 on the Mac:
screenclick-firefox-mac.png

Now if you open the same page in Safari you seem something totally different:
screenclick-safari.pngWhy?

Seemingly somebody decided to use Microsoft's Silverlight, but didn't bother to do a simple plugin check that would either prompt the user to install the plugin or gracefully degrade.

I won't be able to view their site on my Linux desktop either, as Silverlight isn't available for Linux (there is a port, but last time I checked there wasn't a native Debian / Ubuntu version available)

UPDATE: I've now moved to my Ubuntu Linux desktop and this is what I get:

The wonderfully helpful splash page (do they honestly expect me to continue browsing after seeing that?)

screenclick ubuntu linux

and the inner page (for some odd reason it's actually telling me that I need Silverlight now, whereas it wasn't on my Mac!)

PS: For a slightly different view on the Screenclick site check out Hugh's post

Mackers SMS Script Rocks!

I've used the Mackers SMS script on and off over the last couple of years, but I don't think I've ever mentioned how cool and useful it is.

I tried to get the OSX desktop widget to work, but it threw a rather annoying and unhelpful error message. Fortunately the Debian / Ubuntu version is a total breeze to install, so I was up and running again in a couple of minutes.

I'm not a very heavy texter, but I can't see the point in paying for something if I don't have to ie. I get a certain number of free texts every month, so I might as well use them!

WYSIWYG Editors for OSX?

While I may be happy enough doing some quick editing of a php or html document in vim (or equivalent) I miss having access to software like Dreamweaver (the license was for a really old version). I don't think I can justify paying Adobe's prices for a new Dreamweaver license, so what are my options?
Ideally I'd like something which is similar to Dreamweaver, but a LOT cheaper?

Can anyone make any recommendations?

And please don't say NVU!

Mac Keyboard Frustration

The Alt key on an Apple wireless keyboard

Image via Wikipedia

While I love my Mac there are some things that drive me mad.

Where the hell is the hash (#) key?

It's ALT+3 on my keyboard, but you'd have to be a genius to work that one out by yourself

At least the tilde (~) is on the keyboard, unlike a standard Italian PC keyboard which seems to have it hidden from view for some inane reason.
