Which applications would people recommend for my new toy?
I've been trying to find useful Symbian applications for the last couple of days, but most of the sites I've come across don't cater for my phone model, so I haven't been able to do much with it (though I will be posting a detailed review of what I have managed later this weekend :) )

try symbianone.com see the downloads section for loads of leads to apps for your S80 communicator device.
It should also be able to run most Java things.
Anything that says it will run on the Series 80 9500 will also run on the 93001. My own is in the shop at the moment since I smashed the outside screen during an over enthusiastic game of Air Hockey :(
Ok, but what applications would you recommend?
I'd imagine Bernie Goldbach has some good advice on this. He has/had been using Communicators for years.
Well, there's the symbian port of putty so you can SSH from your phone for a start...

AgileMessenger...It's a fairly good IM client supporting Google, AIM, Yahoo, MSN and ICQ...
jMirc is a reasonable IRC client (midlet type)

Niall - Do you know of any software for managing applications on the Nokia from a linux desktop? I really don't want to boot into windows just to use the installer thing
To be honest, all I normally do is take the memory card out, pop it into my PC, and copy the SIS files on. Means the the original installer files are kept in one handy place. Haven't tried it via bluetooth as I don't have bluetooth on my desktop PC.
If running Ubuntu, you can try the gnome-bluetooth package, although I haven't had much experience with it.

It takes the whole of 30seconds, you should surely be able to manage that!!

Putting it in was ok, but I don't enjoy wrestling with the back cover of the phone.. the release button is tiny!
Once you get the hang of it, it's easy to get on and off.
