Are Ugly Websites Successful?

| | Comments (14)
I keep on coming across sites selling ebooks, videos and software that are horrendous looking. Quite a few of them sell goods and services that A-list bloggers and SEOs seem to hold in high regard, so obviously people are buying from them. So, is a winning formula to produce really ugly websites and start selling ebooks?

I'd imagine it's more about the product than the look of the website...

Maybe, but I was always led to believe that presentation was a key in making any sale

Mayber the blogs/sites are heavily SEO'd and thats why they look crap. No? There's loads of them kind of sites.

I always thought it was the product that is the key in any sale. :) Perhaps the ugly sites give the users exactly what they want?

You *would* say that :)

Of course Michele,
My sites are works of information rather than art. :)

Are they very long pages for particular *a* particular product (as opposed to multiple products). If so, hey're probably name-squeeze pages.

Peter

Most of them are very long single page sites for one product.

Peter Knight said:

Yeah - then they're 'name-squeeze' pages. They're actually very effective and follow a prototype.

Peter - Do you have any more information on this prototype?
