EPP for com and net registries

Frank Michlick explains in simple terms the latest big change in the big bad world of domain names: .com and .net go EPP The most significant part of this change is that you will need an authorization code for transfers as is currently the case with .org, .biz and .info As Frank points out there may be issues with getting the code:
While the registrars are obligated to provide you (the registrant or admin contact) with that information, the methods for retrieving it differ from registrar to registrar
And he's being really diplomatic about it :)

The shady registrars (who will do anything in the cause of retention) will be delighted. They willl not list the code in their control panel, they will tell the customer to contact their "Support" department in the interests of security, but that dept will be a blackhole. I better pull my .coms from EasySpace while I have the chance.

I think they already charge some silly "release" fee... or maybe I'm confusing them with someone else .........

EasySpace charged me as recently as 2003 to enable the dns tab in the control panel! prior to such enabling such the dns was stuck at the value entered during registration, which could have been ns1.yourhost.com OR ns1.easyspace.com. Unfortunately I had chosen the default latter, and 10 minutes after registration, when I logged in to check out their control panel I tried to change the dns, and was forced to remove my credit card from its wallet again.
