Microsoft To Break The Internet (again!)
So Internet Explorer version 7 is going to be released this month ....
Yippee!!
I expect a load of things to break...
In no particular order:
- websites of all shapes and sizes
- update services based on IE ActiveX controls
- AIB business banking
And there'll probably be a load of really upset and confused people who won't be able to use their favourite websites due to MS' "protection"...
That's all well and good if you are given the option to download it, but in typical "we run the world" fashion they're forcing it down people's throats.
Charming. So while MS may like to think that they're "fixing" supposed issues that they probably created in the first place IT helpdesks will be swamped by confused users who won't be able to function with the more broken browser (it's been upgraded don't you know!)

No, it works fine with AIB's iBusiness Banking. But then again, I hadn't used iBB in ages until I recently got a new cert. That was after I'd installed 7.0.5700.6

I just don't like the way MS are forcing an unncessary upgrade on people knowing full well that it will cause issues
It'll break Ulster Bank Business Banking too and I'm thrilled. Finally get those lazy jobsworths to support something other than IE6+MSJVM or Netscape 4.7.
Sometimes Microsoft having excess control of a market can be a good thing. Ulster will now have to upgrade the business customers to the same new system as their non-business ones and in the process they'll end up supporting FF, Opera and Konqueror.

I thought it was pretty obvious that Microsoft were going to force it on everyone. It's such a microsoft approach to the Firefox usage upturn.
XP users will doubtless be getting the "there are new updates to install" baloon very soon for this.
I wish activeX didn't exist, bloody rubbish, causes nothing but hassle (based on it's functionality vs security and usability problems for users)!
Expect plenty of zero-day exploits for this one.
It seems a lot of mal-ware crackers have taken to waiting until microsoft released the monthly security update before unleashing the exploits they have discovered during that month! All to get the biggest window of oppertunity to infect unsuspecting IE users.
I'm sure the betas have been exploited a lot on this one already.

Firefox 2.0 seems to be a dramatic improvement behind the scenes rather than new features. Whille there's one or two nice new features, the big improvements are with regard to memory and speed in general.
A funny thing to note:
if you try to download FF via IE7, it blocks the download, stating that IE cannot guarantee this software download, and that it could be malware.
Hows that for a lame attempt at cornering the market!
