EUrid Promoting .eu at ICANN

ICANN Lisbon This afternoon's sessions includes a 4 hour session with EUrid staff which I am currently attending. They seem to be going over some of the statistics and facts related to the EU namespace, though whether or not they stand up to closer (and possibly more cynical) scrutiny is another matter. It should be very interesting to see if they will be this upbeat after the first round of renewals ie. after April 7th. The Belgian registry, for example, saw a massive reduction in registered domains 12 months after their free domain promotion.

This is one seminar that I would have like to have attended. I've been reading through the stats in EURid's 2006 report and there are so many attempts at covering up the rotten state of .eu that it astounding. Most news outlets have featured on the 63 character names - that's a rather telling sing that they don't take EURid's stats at face value either. I'd really have liked to hear their explanations for some of the dodgier domains and practices that they permitted.

Now that I think about it, the EURid management are largely ex-DNS.be. So after making a mess of .be, the European Commission and its "expert" advisors gave these bozos .eu to make a mess of. It is enough to turn one into a Euro-cynic. :)

I'll be posting a more detailed followup on this, as the afternoon session developed into something _very_ interesting

Sounds like it was fun for everyone except the Eurid people. :) It will make for interesting reading.
