Royal Mint Revamp
The Royal Mint has unveiled the new designs for the UK coins. They look really nice, though I guess this means they won't be joining the Eurozone anytime soon :)
You can order a variety of mint sets via their site - if you're insanely rich go for the Platinum ones, whereas mere mortals can opt for base metal ones.

...and what the hell is that harp doing on the coins?
Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, where these coins will be legal tender. The harp represents Northern Ireland. Perhaps a Lambeg Drum would have been more appropiate.
They are brilliant. Mulley pointed them out earlier but I could imagine myself (if I lived in the U.K. of course) re-arranging my change on the counter trying to make up the full herald.
The designer is an Irish man too. Well ok a Northern Irishman but still and they are very impressive. Now all I need is £10,990!
I might be a bit old-fashioned, but I cannot share the enthusiasm over the new designs for UK coins. It appears to me that it is nothing but the same old British wine, not even in new bottles, but just with new labels on the old bottles.
For me the new design looks like a very desperate attempt to make something very old (but solid) look hip and modern, for no real reason.
After all, coins have a very practical purpose and are not works of art. Given the fact that in the UK almost nothing works properly and every public service is inefficient and underfunded, I am sure the money spent on the new design and the minting of millions of new coins could have been used for some more pressing matters.
