IPv4 Space For Sale?

One of the hot topics at the moment is the exhaustion of ip4 space.
While this may not sound very exciting to "normal" people the impact it could have on you might be quite painful. If ISPs have to pay a heavy premium for more IP space as their networks expand, then the end users may be forced to pay a premium.

Jay Daley, Nominet's CTO, has an interesting post on the Nominet blog about the possible creation of a market in IPv4 space. It's an interesting read and it will be interesting to see how things pan out in the coming 12 - 36 months.

Of course if more ISPs were to start actively using ipv6 then none of this would really matter... I wouldn't hold my breath though, as so much consumer equipment in active use at present isn't compatible

RIPE Geek Humour

Paul sent me a link to this earlier this morning (I'm in LA, so 8 hours behind):

I was just chatting to Niall about RIPE assignments and members and he gave me a nice little command to check data.

You need to run this in a shell:
whois -i origin AS39122 -h whois.ripe.net

If the RIPE member in question has been keeping their data current you should get back information on all their IP assignments (or is that allocations? I always mix them up!)

IPV6 on RedHat

Niall has posted some details on setting up IPV6 on Redhat based distros. Why do I mention it? Well it's kind of nice to be able to get IPV6 going across all servers and services on our network. If other people's networks are capable of communication over v6 then we should be able to reciprocate (like was the case when I was in Lisbon).

Where are all the IPs?

In case you are wondering where all the IP addresses have gone to the IPv4 Address Use Report for 2006 has just been posted.

Ripe Policy Change Proposals

Ripe is proposing a further two policy changes with regard to IPv4 allocations. One is in relation to the allocation periods, while the other is in relation to the number and way blocks of IPs are allocated
