Techie :: Techno ::: January 2004 Archives
If I was asked to come up with a list of useful software I'd be hardpushed to give a simple answer. There are so many useful bits of software out there, but maybe they aren't all that important.
I like a lot of the Macromedia products, I just wish they were a bit more affordable.
Silly title I'll admit, but somebody brought my attention to the dichotomy expressed by an Irish site today.
Although they claim to support linux etc., they host their main site on Windows. Now we can all accept that for various commercial reasons people will host and develop on a variety of platforms, but surely from a philosophical standpoint their position is quite untenable??
The bulk of our servers run some flavour of Linux:
RedHat 7.3
RedHat 9
OpenBSD
FreeBSD
Slackware 9
We do have a few Windows servers either for shared or dedicated clients, but personally I think we are all a lot more comfortable with Linux.
How a company can market Linux goods and services on a windows based site is really beyond me. Unfortunately they couldn't see the irony of the situation, even though there was a flamewar over on ILUG as a result...
Techies like toys, but I'm never too sure whether I should be classified as a techie or not. I guess I'm not really when I compare myself to some of my peers..
In either case I DO like my techie toys. This year so far has been good to me in that area. Last year I was one of the first people to pilot a 3G network in Italy using H3G (tre) . The handset is a NEC e606. The jury is still out on that one to be honest - it has some nice features, but overall it's not that great. Simple functions are either not available, or almost impossible to access.
Well we finally managed to get the bot to respond!
I would love to say that I solved the problem, but that would be a blatant lie!
I only managed to find part of the solution - Kenshin filled in the gaps
Spamhaus have recently launched a new RBL for public use. We've been playing with it for the last few days... So far the results have been very good. As it pushed up the spamscore on emails that may have made it though the loop
You can get information about the RBLs on their site : http://www.spamhaus.org/xbl/index.lasso
